For PULSE Contemporary Art Fair 2016, Rashaad Newsome Studio premiered a short film for ORS Olive Oil, called Shade Screen Tests, an intimate incarnation of his prolific performance series Shade Compositions. The film was the launch of the ORS Olive Oil social media campaign #NoStereotypes, designed to empower all gender identities of color to embrace their unique beauty and honor that of others. From its inception, Shade Compositions was an elevation of Black womanhood that transformed stereotypical gestures associated with marginal genders of color into a sonic celebration of culture and vernacular. Shade Screen Tests presents a deeper, more personal look at this concept through individual portraits of women meant to be cast in Shade Compositions.
